WHAT SETS PATRICIA STEVENS APART FROM OTHER AGENCIES?
It is the nature of our company that makes us so very different. The Stevens Family founded the company in 1942 working only with women. The sensitivity to women on which the company was founded remains today though we now work with men and children as well as women. We believe that modeling is a positive experience, and we deal with the models in our agency, as human beings with feelings and emotions that need to be nurtured and cared for, not exploited.
WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND PATRICIA STEVENS
Since 1942 the name Patricia Stevens has been synonymous with successful women, modeling, fashion and beauty pageant winners. The firm's headquarters are located in the freight house district of Kansas City, MO. Internationally known for placing models with prestigious clients and assignments. Melissa Stevens, President and CEO of Patricia Stevens Model & Talent Agency plans, directs and approves every facet of one of the nation's leading agencies. You will see our models/actors in local advertising for Blue Cross Blue Shield, Saks Fifth Avenue, HALLS, Crown Center and nationally for Target, Diet Coke, Wal-Mart, Pizza Hut, Aquafresh Toothpaste, to name only a few.
IS IT EXPENSIVE TO GET STARTED?
Typically we begin with a photo session! That is the simplest way for us to put you in front of our clients! We offer a variety of options to enable you to begin at any level! Check out our Professional Model Marketing Tools section of our Website! Our objective is for you to make money! It is our responsibility to assist in your development in any way we can. We carefully advise our models and offer workshops and seminars for their continued development!
HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY? WHAT IF YOU HAVE NO MODELING EXPERIENCE? IS THERE A WAY TO LEARN?
Everyone has to start somewhere! We believe that if you are willing to work at your craft you can develop the skills to be very successful! It is our job to help you get started! We offer workshops at various times during the year for our model development. Our Tom Logan workshop is an incredible opportunity to learn from the master at the most spectacular television/film commercial workshop! Tom Logan is and actor, director, producer and author. He will teach what casting directors, directors and producers want! Your weekend will include acting technique for television, soaps, and feature films with hands on experience shared with you by one of the strongest forces working in the entertainment industry, Tom Logan. Another great way to start is to volunteer at local stores to model. Study magazines for posing techniques and make-up ideas.
HOW DO YOU GET STARTED?
We like to keep life simple! Call or schedule a time to visit our studios so we can discuss the options available to you as an individual! We will usually begin with a photo session, which enables us to start marketing our talent immediately!
DOES MODELING MEAN YOU MUST BE TALL?
My first answer to that question is no! There are so many different types of modeling that do not have height or size requirements! If you want to do runway work in a major market (New York, Paris, Milan) women really should be 5'9" or taller (however, Kate Moss is relatively short and she started with runway work for Calvin Klein). Men should be 5'11" to 6'1". We firmly believe that if you have the will and the talent, you can do whatever you wish to do. TV Commercials, commercial print, trade shows, and special events assignments work with all heights and sizes. We work with models of all heights and sizes. We have worked with models in wheelchairs and with all kinds of special abilities. In fact the president of our company is only 5' 0"! She has done hundreds of television commercials and thousands of fashion shows in her modeling career.
DO YOU WORK WITH ALL ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS?
We have always believed that models are models - no matter skin, hair or eye color! We work with models of all nationalities and ethnic backgrounds! In fact, Patricia Stevens Model & Talent Agency booked the first African-American model into one of Kansas City's finest stores in the early 1960's! We have always been "home" to professional models of all shapes, sizes and colors!
WHAT KINDS OF THINGS CAN YOU DO ON YOUR OWN TO HELP YOUR CAREER?
Take good care of yourself! Choose a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Be sure your hair is always in the best shape. You care for your hands and feet - always well groomed with your manicure and pedicure. Join our Fashion & Model Association for regular updates on style and fashion trends! You'll find more information @ Patricia Stevens Fashion & Model Association section of our web site.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A PHOTO SESSION?
We provide the make up artists/stylists for your photo session to bring out the best images for you! A good way to prepare is to study some current fashion magazines or catalogues for movement and expression. We will be there for assistance at the session but if the model does some pre-planning and comes with some ideas the more involved they are and the better the session will be. We will provide you with a photo session preparation sheet prior to the date of your actual photo session. The preparation sheet will give you great ideas and help you choose the wardrobe for your session! We will be there every step of the way to be sure that your session is a fabulous experience.
HOW DO YOUR PICTURES AND THINGS HELP YOUR MODELING CAREER?
Your pictures are a means of marketing you to our clients who are scattered around the word! Everyone who is interested in hiring a model could never see you in person. Even if you could afford to travel you still can't be in two places at once but your book can be! So we encourage the development of a portfolio! The term portfolio is used to describe the case in which the prints (photographs of the model-you!) are kept. It's also used to describe the collection of pictures (called prints in the industry) of you within the portfolio. As you begin to develop your "portfolio" or "book" you will need to include prints, or as many call them pictures, of yourself shot by a professional fashion photographer and tear sheets (actual pages from magazines you have appeared in or advertisements you have been featured in).
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU UPDATE YOUR PORTFOLIO?
That depends upon how often your look changes. If your facial features continue to develop and change, or you are still growing, maybe once or twice a year you can update. If you change your hair color or style or length just as often as you make major changes. We will always make recommendations to our models when and when not to! WE know doing photo sessions is fun and very exciting and often the models in our agency want to do another session just for fun and to enhance their technique in front of the camera! That is always a great idea!
ABOUT THE PATRICIA STEVENS MODEL & TALENT AGENCY... DO I HAVE TO SIGN A CONTRACT?
We do not work with contracts with our models in this (Kansas City) market. If we make arrangements for one of our models to move to another market we do enter a "Mother Agency" agreement with the model so that we can provide protection for you in another market. We are always wary of agencies that insist on contracts! In small markets you should be able to work on your own, there won't be model agencies in every city.
You also want to be sure the agency is a good fit for you that you are comfortable with them, and they handle the kinds of assignments you wish to do!
If your neighbor asks you to do a Television Commercial for their restaurant and you are contracted with an agency, you would have to pay your agency a fee for the job, even though they did not get you the job! At Patricia Stevens we want you to do as many assignments as you can! We do not want a commission on any job we did not get for you! We will assist you in determining the rate you should ask to be paid and if the assignment is right for you.
WHAT KIND OF MODELING ASSIGNMENTS DO YOU HANDLE?
We provide models for every possible tasteful and dignified venue. For example there are four types of modeling, Print, Electronic Media, Live Promotional and Live Fashion.
- PRINT: Print refers to photographs or illustrations in printed media, such as newspapers or magazines, catalogs, brochures, weeklies, direct mail flyers, books, posters, billboards and packaging.
- ELECTRONIC MEDIA: Electronic Media work appears on radio, television, videotape, film, slide programs, and other audio and/or visual presentations made for advertising, promotional, feature, or entertainment, industrial, public relations, educational or direct sales purposes.
- LIVE PROMOTIONAL: Live Promotional modeling refers to the model making appearances or presenting products. This work is done at conventions, sales meetings, or exhibitions for the purposes of advertising, entertainment, promotion, public relations, education and direct sales. Live promotional marketing is often referred to as live industrial modeling.
- LIVE FASHION: Live fashion modeling entails showing fashions in person for a single individual or a group, either in a formal, structured show or in an informal presentation. Models are also employed by designers and manufacturers as fitting models to establish designs and sizes for garments. Models show fashions in stores, in designer salons, and showrooms, at entertainment functions and on television.
ABOUT MODELING ASSIGNMENTS... HOW CAN I SUCCESSFULLY JUGGLE ASSIGNMENTS WITH SCHOOL AND/OR MY JOB?
Our agency is very sensitive to the needs of our models! In fact most of our models do attend school or work full time and they are still able to do modeling assignments! We are successful in scheduling around your other activities because we work very closely with each and every model in the agency! If you were on the track team for example you would be less available during track season. If you were a CPA you'd be unavailable during tax season. If you keep us informed of your schedule we can work around it. So the real answer is the more we know about you and your activities the better we can work around it!
IS KANSAS CITY A GOOD PLACE TO FIND MODELING JOBS?
Melissa Stevens "grew up" modeling in Kansas City even though she stopped growing in 6th grade at 5 feet tall! She has done hundreds of Television Commercials; tons of editorial and commercial print work. We truly enjoy the fact that we can work will all shapes and sizes of models! We really think this is a great market to start in and many of our models enjoy working in modeling for many years, right here in Kansas City! Some wish to try the larger markets and are extremely successful! We always like to see people get started at home or at least close to home! You'll have a chance to learn about the business slowly and it is usually much safer and more comfortable to have the support of your family nearby!
IF I HAVE TO TURN DOWN ASSIGNMENT, WILL IT AFFECT MY CHANCES OF GETTING MORE INTERVIEWS/ JOBS IF I HAVE TO TURN ONE DOWN?
No, no, no! You will always have other things going on in your life! We will call you again and again and again probably! You may have a full time job or, if you are a student, may be involved in a school play which happens only occasionally, or for our college models during mid terms or finals week - their tests are more important than any model assignment! (Most of them anyway!) We have been doing this since 1942, expect, we will always have model assignments!
WHEN CLIENTS COME, WHAT DO THEY LOOK FOR IN A MODEL?
Clients look for a model that can convey a specific image. For every client the image is different! The image could be portrayed with a look or a personality! It can be a size, a hair color an athletic look or a glamorous look. A great model has the ability to be a chameleon! To change his or her look depending on the needs of a client! This is another reason a broad collection of looks in your portfolio is very important!
DOES IT MATTER IF YOU LIVE IN THE SAME STATE, AS WE ARE LOCATED?
No it doesn't matter at all! We have models and clients all over the world. We provide models for the National Cat Show in Atlanta, Georgia and the FORD MOTOR COMPANY at the Omaha, Nebraska AUTO SHOW and The Ace Hardware Show in Los Angeles! Our models recently auditioned for a television pilot in Chicago, IL! We are everywhere!
